As Senior Media Director of Ardmore in Northern Ireland, Ally has a passion for the media world and consistently looks for ways to upskill and motivate her team. This is a big passion point of hers and can be seen in the culture she has created within her team - fostering innovative media planning. Ally is also Co-Chair of the Worldwide Partners Next Gen Council, a group that is helping to inform and develop the future of our network.
We asked Ally ten questions to learn more about her background, what excites her about the advertising industry and what independence means to her.
WPI >> Where did you grow up and where do you live now?
Ally >> I grew up in Ireland and currently reside in Belfast.
WPI >> How did you end up in the advertising industry?
Ally >> I have always loved advertisements. Strange I know! We have very graphic road safety advertising in the UK and when I was younger I was fascinated by how the storytelling and music could make you stop what you were doing and watch. I wanted to work on that account and help to save lives - I am happy to say I am currently the Media Director on the Road Safety account in Northern Ireland.
WPI >> What excites you about the advertising industry? What pisses you off?
Ally >> Variety. We all complain about the pressures and agency life but I think there's a little element of excitement in there too. We get to work with such a huge range of clients on fascinating campaigns and I love that. Usual gripes like everyone else - I find vague briefs difficult but acknowledge that sometimes if a client is being vague they might not trust you entirely yet!
WPI >> What was your first job and what did it teach you?
Ally >> I worked in my uncle's Sports shop and it taught me to how to sell. I am a firm believer that people buy from people they like.
WPI >> What is a book, movie, TV show or podcast that you find inspiring?
Ally >> Savages by Shirley Conran. It's a little left field but it's about a group of women who find themselves stranded on an Island and have to fight for survival.. Speaks to my spirit!
WPI >> What is one of the favorite projects you have worked on at your agency?
Ally >> I adored working on the National Trust pitch at the agency. I love the outdoors and it was a brand that I felt passionate towards. I put my heart into the pitch and nearly cried when I heard we won it! Besides that, people development is my favourite ongoing "project" at the agency. I am a firm believer in helping people reach their potential and creating an environment my team can excel in.
WPI >> How has Covid-19 changed your life, personally or professionally?
Ally >> It taught me the importance of close friends and good relationships with family!
WPI >> What is the biggest takeaway you have learned since being elected to the WPI Next Gen Council?
Ally >> The Power of the WPI network. When something isn't tangible it can sometimes feel lofty but I have firsthand experienced the fun, joy, and client advantage that local-global agencies working together than deliver.
WPI >> What does independence mean to you?
Ally >> It means brave and unshackled!
WPI >> What would you be doing if you weren’t in advertising?
Ally >> I honestly haven't a clue - it's a large part of my identity! Perhaps watching Mad Men and wondering if advertising is all it's painted out to be!
